Job Title: Chief Medical Scientist, Haematology.

Reports to: Administratively- Laboratory Manager/nominated deputy.

Clinically - Consultant Haematologists.

Location: Haematology Laboratory

Job Purpose: The fundamental philosophy guiding this position is to promote and preserve the Mission, Values and Ethos of the hospital

To manage the provision of a Quality Diagnostic Haematology and Coagulation Service in co-operation with the Laboratory Manager, Clinical Director of Pathology, Consultant Haematologist, Medical Scientists, and laboratory staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

General:

Candidates for appointment must Possess:

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science from the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). Or

Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). Or

Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork - Cork Institute of Technology course AND Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Practice.


MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology.

MSc Clinical Chemistry, University of Dublin, Trinity College.

MSc Biomedical Science, University of Ulster.

MSc Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology / University College Cork.

MSc Molecular Pathology, Dublin Institute of Technology / University of Dublin, Trinity College. Or

Have attained the Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (Awarded prior to 1999).

Essential Experience

Possess at least seven years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of seven years full time clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory since qualifying as a medical scientist, two years of which were spent in a promotional post.

Essential Skills

The Chief Medical Scientist will be expected to show initiative and self-organisation in the carrying out of the duties and responsibilities of the position. They must be able to work with and ensure a high level of cooperation, communication and teamwork with patients, technical personnel, medical and administrative staff and with equipment manufacturers and service providers.

Professional (Scientific) Knowledge

Demonstrate evidence of theoretical and practical knowledge in the relevant laboratory discipline
Demonstrate Up-to-date knowledge of best practice in delivering a Quality Laboratory Service and awareness of the requirements of ISO 15189.
